Time Correlation in Tunneling of Photons

چکیده

I propose to consider photon tunneling as a space-time correlation phenomenon between the emission and absorption of a photon on the two sides of a barrier. Standard technics based on an appropriate counting rate formula may then be applied to derive the tunneling time distribution without any ad hoc definition of this quantity. General formulae are worked out for a potential model using Wigner-Weisskopf method. For a homogeneous square barrier in the limit of zero tunneling probability a vanishing tunneling time is obtained.

Time resolved correlation of microwave photons produced by inelastic tunneling of Copper pairs

We explore the characteristics of a source of anti-bunched microwave photons. This source has been developed by Max Hofheinz’s and its stationary properties have been characterized. In order to fully characterize this source when operated with pulse excitation, we modify the experimental setup and develop new numerical tools to extract the time resoled first and second order photon correlation ...

TBM Tunneling Construction Time with Respect to Learning Phase Period and Normal Phase Period

In every tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunneling project, there is an initial low production phase so-called the Learning Phase Period (LPP), in which low utilization is experienced and the operational parameters are adjusted to match the working conditions. LPP can be crucial in scheduling and evaluating the final project time and cost, especially for short tunnels for which it may constitute a ...

Quantum noise in ac-driven resonant-tunneling double-barrier structures: Photon-assisted tunneling versus electron antibunching

We study the quantum noise of the electronic current in a double-barrier system with a single resonant level. In the framework of the Landauer formalism, we treat the double barrier as a quantum coherent scattering region that can exchange photons with a coupled electric field, e.g., a laser beam or a periodic ac bias voltage. As a consequence of the manifold parameters that are involved in thi...

Tunneling time, the Hartman effect, and superluminality: A proposed resolution of an old paradox

The issue of tunneling time is repletewith controversy and paradoxes. The controversy stems from the fact thatmany tunneling time definitions seem to predict superluminal tunneling velocities. One prediction, termed the Hartman effect, states that the tunneling time becomes independent of barrier length for thick enough barriers, ultimately resulting in unbounded tunneling velocities. Experimen...

Do single photons tunnel faster than light?

Experiments done with single photons in the early 1990’s produced a surprising result: that single photons pass through a photonic tunnel barrier with a group velocity faster than the vacuum speed of light. This result has stimulated intense discussions related to causality, the speed of information transfer, the nature of barrier tunneling and the meaning of group velocity. The superluminality...
